New WordPress plugin Total Users Lite allows you to display total site users easily. It comes with widget and supports many other instances and custom PHP function with lots of arguments for templates. You can use short inline help or instruction of each option and easily understand and manage those options.
No settings page, you can hide a couple of roles including roles that are having no users yet. It can also display additional test (supports HTML) before and after the widget content.
