Twitter allows its users to opt out from tailored advertisements and enable or disable tracking. Although, opting out doesn’t removes all tailored advertisements (advertisements containing promoted tweets & trends etc) by Twitter. Instead it prevents Twitter from collecting external data in order to modify what type of ads you receive on your account’s home page.
Built-in option to opt out of Twitter’s tailored advertisements
Login to your Twitter account and follow the given steps:
- Navigate to Twitter settings from the top-right gear icon and select “Settings.”
- From “Account” section i.e. the first page, lookup for “Promoted content” and untick the box by “Tailor ads based on information shared by ad partners.”
- Now look up for “Personalization” option and untick “Tailor Twitter based on my recent website visits”
That’s it. You are done.
Alternatively or in-addition to above method you may also use Remove Promotions for Twitter, a Google Chrome extension. Likewise the above method doesn’t guarantee the removal of all promoted content so the extension could be a better way to remove all promoted trends, accounts, & tweets on Twitter.
Remove Promotions for Twitter – App
The extension automatically removes promoted Accounts, Trends, & Tweets from the Twitter website. It’s very simple & doesn’t incur any performance costs.
Once you install the extension, it prompts you saying that it accesses your data on mobile.twitter.com & twitter.com. The developer says that he has injected some completely harmless CSS & JavaScript onto each domain. As advertised, nobody reads any data back into the extension or any third-party. If it still worries someone then the source code is freely available on GitHub to know what exactly it does for you.
Firefox user may use Bad Bird Blocker that also removes the promotions. Once installed, you won’t see any promoted content such as tweets, trends, or accounts on Twitter.
