It’s very easy to edit the content of a MediaWiki page, you just need to click the “Edit” page tab at the top of the page then make changes to the content and click click the “Save page” button. Moreover you may use the “Show preview” button to see what your change look like, before you really save them to go live. Easy as that! The tricky part is editing rules, editing conventions, and formatting.
For Bold & Italic Text:
- For Italic text use ”italic”
- For Bold text use ”’bold”’
- For Bold and italic use ””’bold & italic””’
For headings of different levels such as H1, H2 etc use these rules:
- For H2 use == Level 2 ==
- For H3 use === Level 3 ===
- For H4 use ==== Level 4 ====
and so on up to level 5 and level 6.
Unordered List i.e bullets:
* Start each line
* with an [[Wikipedia:asterisk|asterisk]] (*).
** More asterisks give deeper
*** and deeper levels.
* Line breaks
don’t break levels.
*** But jumping levels creates empty space.
Any other start ends the list.
Ordered List or Numbered List:
# Start each line
# with a number sign (#).
## More number signs give deeper
### and deeper
### levels.
# Line breaks
don’t break levels.
### But jumping levels creates empty space.
# Blank lines
# end the list and start another.
Any other start also
ends the list.
So these are some of the basic formatting rules. For advanced formatting rules, you may head over to MediaWiki formatting help page. MediaWiki uses MarkDown editor rules which consists of normal characters like asterisks, apostrophes or equal signs which have a special function in the wiki, sometimes depending on their position.
For example * is the sign of bullet list, you can add list items simply by placing * before each item on a new line and when two ** are placed after one, the list goes deeper to second level. In the same way you can take list deep to third level by placing *** signs.
